About This Interview

Sheila Nevins was interviewed for two hours in New York, NY.  Nevins described her early experience in documentary filmmaking for such television series as PBS’s The Great American Dream Machine and CBS’s Who’s Who .  She detailed her hiring at HBO in the late 1970s and described the network in these early years.  She talked about her own short-lived production company, Spinning Wheels, and the programming she produced.  She talked about her return to HBO in the mid-80s and the notable documentary and family series that she has overseen, ultimately as Executive Vice President of Original Programming.  She also noted the programming she has overseen at Cinemax.  Among the individual shows and series that Nevins touched on include: Taxicab Confessions, The Broadcast Tapes of Dr. Peter, Half-Past Autumn: The Life & Works of Gordon Parks , and Elaine Stritch: At Liberty.   The interview was conducted by Karen Herman on May 2, 2006.
